LA County Supervisor Don Knabe will be awarding the Latino Comics Expo a scroll in honor of recognition for the upcoming Expo. The Expo is having it's inaugural Los Angeles event at the Museum of Latin American Art this weekend, August 17& 18.
Accepting on behalf of the Expo will be Co-founder/Creative Director Javier Hernandez. He'll be joined by LCX exhibiting artists Jules Rivera (Misfortune High) and Lestat (a masked luchador who is also creating his own comics). Also attending the ceremony will be Stuart A. Ashman, the President and CEO of the Museum of Latin American Art.The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, August 13, at the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room. The event begins at 9:30 am.The Latino Comics Expo is proud to accept this recognition in the name of all our participating artists and vendors, our partners, and to the great Latino creators who came before us.

As reported by Latino Comics Expo Co-founder Javier Hernandez:Yesterday in Downtown Los Angeles I had the great honor of leading a delegation from the Latino Comics Expo to accept a certificate of recognition from LA County Supervisor Don Knabe.The award was coordinated between LCX Co-founder Ricardo Padilla, our press agent Patricia Perezfrom VPE Public Relations and the staff of Supervisor Knabe.Accompanying me were several of our exhibiting creators: Cartoonist Jules Rivera, storyteller Steve Ross and Lestat, a professional masked wrestler working on his own comic. Also joining us was Stuart Ashman, President & CEO of the Museum of Latin American Art, host for our upcoming event this weekend. We were also invited to a breakfast reception at the Supervisor's office beforehand. Here's Lestat talking to Field Deputy Connie Sziebl: We presented the Supervisor with a framed copy of our Latino Comics Expo LA poster:After the reception, we walked down the hallways and took the elevators (which turned a lot of heads what with a masked wrestler accompanying us!) and made our way to the Supervisors Hearing Room.After about 20 mintues we were called up to the stage, where Supervisor Knabe read a very nice intro to the Expo and presented us with the award. I was then asked to speak to the audience, which I only found out that morning I would be asked to do! But seizing the moment is the mark of an independent artist (at least, I thought that at the moment!)....I thanked the Supervisor and the Board for recognizing us, and I shared with the audience that while we created the Expo to provide a platform for Latino artists and creators, we also want to inspire young Latino boys and girls to express themselves positively and creatively through art and comics.Walking the corridors of the LA County Board of Supervisors, accepting the award, addressing the chamber... This was a very memorable day. It underscores the legitimacy of comics as art, and it's a tribute to all the creative talents who produce their work and all the advocates who support and foster the arts.Ricardo and I couldn't have a Latino Comics Expo without all the creative artists producing their works. To them we extend our sincerest gratitude and support!

Our two Guests of Honor for this year's Latino Comics Expo San Jose are Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, the creators of the internationally acclaimed LOVE AND ROCKETS comic book series.Launched from Fantagraphics Books in 1982 with their brother Mario Hernandez, this series has been lauded as one of the preeminent examples of the comic book medium and to this day continues in the annual NEW STORIES editions.In addition to their work on the LOVE AND ROCKETS comics, they've each maintained Award-winning solo careers throughout the past decades. Jaime's work has appeared in THE NEW YORKER, DC Comics as well as creating artwork for THE CRITERION COLLECTION and for such bands as LOS LOBOS for their "The Town and The City" album. Amongst Jaime's many awards are the 2012 Ignatz Award Winner for Outstanding Artist and the 2013 Harvey Award Winner for Best Cartoonist.Gilbert Hernandez has amassed a prolific amount of stand-alone graphic novels, including "Speak of the Devil", "Fatima" and "Citizen Rex" (in collaboration with Mario Hernandez) for Dark Horse Comics, "Grip" and "Sloth" for DC Comics and "Marble Season" for Drawn & Quarterly. His most recent awards include a 2009 United States Artists Literature Fellowship, the 2013 Pen Graphic Literature Award and the 2014 Society of Illustrators Silver Medal: Comics and Cartoon-Long Form.

Kevin Gerard, writer of the DIEGO'S DRAGON series of books for middle school and young adult readers, will be attending his first Latino Comics Expo this October. A popular speaker at libraries and schools, Kevin's series tells the ongoing story of a middle school student and his fantastic adventures with the fire-breathing dragon Magnifico.
Omar Morales, creator and writer of the graphic novel CruZader: Agent of the Vatican will be making his Latino Comics Expo debut as well. Omar recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to publish the hardcover graphic novel, featuring a cover by comic book great Paul Gulacy.![]()
Rafael Navarro, Xeric Award winning cartoonist and Emmy Award winning storyboard artist, returns for his 5th consecutive Expo. Crystal Gonzalez returns to join us in San Jose this October. Crystal's comic book series, IN THE DARK, features her trademark whimsical and macabre art. In addition to her comics, her art appears in gallery shows as well as the occassional animated shorts she creates featuring her parade of mischievous creations. Liz Mayorga has appeared at every Latino Comics Expo since the first one in 2011. A freelance illustrator and writer, she also produces her own zines and comix (THE PIGEON QUEEN, INKED). Since 2011, she's been the Co-Director of the San Francisco Zine Fest. Jaime Portillo, writer and publisher (Jimmy Daze Comics), joins us for his first Latino Comics Expo. In 2007 he won a Xeric Award for his first graphic novel, GABRIEL. His latest book, HELL PASO: THE STORY OF DALLAS STOUDENMIRE, was awarded the Border Regional Library Association SOUTHWEST BOOK AWARD in 2013, the first comic book to ever been given that honor. Carlos Saldaña is the creator of BURRITO, an all-ages comic featuring a time-traveling, adventurous donkey. In the early 90s, he was part of a pioneering wave of Latino creators self-publishing their own comics. Jose Cabrera, illustrator and the Latino Comics Expo's Graphic Designer, is the creator of the CRYING MACHO MAN strip. Among his clients are the Ghost Hunters of Urban Los Angeles (GHOULA) and the band LAS BRUJAS. Jose created the Latino Comics Expo logo, and has handled the graphic design for each of our posters since our first show in 2011. Richard Dominguezjoins us for his first ever Latino Comics Expo. Richard is the creator of the comic series EL GATO NEGRO, and also runs an illustration/ design studio in Dallas, TX. Richard was among a wave of Mexican-American cartoonists in the early 90s leading a self-publishing movement which inspired many other artists of Latino descent to create their own DIY comic book properties.Neat-O Comics, headed by Luis Calderon and Johnny Parker, bring their comic BLACK FIST & BROWN HAND to the Expo. Intended to smash stereotypes, their exploitation heroes "protect their community from racism, sexism, discrimination, exploitation, B.E.T., Hipsters, Mitt Romney’s sons, & auto tuned hip-hop music!!". EL VERDE, a web comic and a stage play, will be represented by director/producer Alejandra Cisneros and writer/actor Anthony Aguilar. The plays chronicle the adventures of El Verde in a variety of scenarios involving superhero parody and cultural satire. Frederick Aldama, Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor of English at Ohio State University, returns once again to join us at the Expo. Aldama is the author and editor of 20 books, including Your Brain on Latino Comics. His latest book The Cinema of Robert Rodriguez is due this Fall. Aldama will be hosting several panels at this year's Expo, including "The Art Of Geometric Storytelling In Latino Comics" and an interview with Jaime Hernandez.Brownywood Entertainment join us for their first Latino Comics Expo. Co-owners Tony Flores (artist) and Jeevn Atwal (writer) will be debuting their new comic Wings of Anathema, as well as having prints and merchandise of their other creations, including Lil Jeewee.Chunky Girl Comics, represented by founder/writer Marisa Garcia, will be joining us once again. The ladies from the Heavy Response Unit empower people to look beyond the typical image for superheroes and change the standards of what is beautiful in the world of comics, pop culture and cosplay.
Rhode Montijo is the prolific creator behind the Pablo's Inferno comic series, as well as numerous children's books including Cloud Boy,The Gumazing Gum Girl! andHalloween Kid(which is currently in production as an animated film). Gilbert Armendariz joins us for his time at the Latino Comics Expo. Gilbert is a graphic artist and cartoonist who publishes under his imprint NDVR Comics and experiments with digital animation in his free time. He'll be bringing his comix and prints to event.
Gabrielle Gamboahas attended every Latino Comics Expo since our first one in 2011. She's a cartoonist and art instructor who this year has work in three books by Rob Kirby: Pratfall, NoMe and Double Nickels on the Dime, as well as a story in the anthology Henry & Glenn Forever and Ever.Gabby will also once again be conducting another children's art workshop for us.Grasiela Rodriguezhas also attended every Expo and is the founder of Not Your Friend Comic Books. ICE DISH, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Illegal Superheroes, will have a Community Outreach operation during the Latino Comics Expo in San José. Various agents will be on hand to communicate and educate the public on the issues involving the investigation of "a wide range of domestic, international, and intergalactic activities arising from the movement of illegal superheroes into, within, and out of the United States".Their mission statement asserts that they were "created based on the recognition that the country's current immigration policy must be applied to all, including superheroes. ICE DISH’s mission is to enforce this idea by identifying, investigating, apprehending, and deporting illegal superheroes, along with raising awareness about pertinent issues. The agency is responsible for dismantling illegal superhero-related vulnerabilities regarding the nation's border, economic, transportation, and infrastructure security. ICE DISH is primarily devoted to its two principal operating components - Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO)."

Famed Chicano cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz will be returning to join us this year in San José. Lalo, creator of the nationally-syndicated newspaper strip LA CUCARACHA, has created the artwork for this year's Expo poster.In addition to his award-winning cartooning, Lalo is also a writer on the upcoming Fox series BORDERTOWN, as well as the co-host of the long-running KPFK Radio satirical talk show, the POCHO HOUR OF POWER. His latest work includes illustrating the New York Times bestseller A Most Imperfect Union: A Contrarian History of the United States, written by Ilan Stavans.

J. Gonzo, creator of the lucha-libre comic book LA MANO DEL DESTINO, will be joining us once again at the Latino Comics Expo. The former Senior Art Director for McFarlane Toys/Todd McFarlane Productions and Creative Director of an ad agency, Gonzo is currently in the middle of his six issue series featuring his once-champion Luchadore and his quest to seek retribution on his betrayers.Keith Rainville, author and publisher (FROM PARTS UNKNOWN, ZOMBIE MEXICANO) has written extensively on masked wrestler pop culture and vintage Mexican monster media since 1995. He returns to the Expo with two exciting panels exploring the worlds of classic Mexican horror and superheroes in film and comics:On Saturday, he'll be presenting his popular Heroes of Mexican Comics (with special guests Rafael Navarro and J. Award winning filmmaker Jim Lujan returns once again to join us at the Latino Comics Expo. He writes, directs, voices and scores his animated movies, and for his current project he's teaming up legendary independent filmmaker Bill Plympton to create the full-length animated feature, REVENGEANCE. Jim created our new animated trailer and will be screening some of his films during the two days of the Expo.Ramon Villalobos, illustrator and comic book artist, will be joining us for his first Latino Comics Expo. Ramon recently illustrated a Young Avengers storyline for Marvel Comics'ORIGINAL SIN series, created the covers for EXIT GENERATION and has illustrated a story in Valiant's upcoming anniversary issue of ARCHER & ARMSTRONG. Mapache Studios, a comic book studio from Chile, make their Latino Comics Expo debut. Comprised by writer Fernando de Peña and artist Rodrigo Vargas, Mapache currently have two series available online and in print, LUCHA LIBREandELISA Y LOS MUTANTES. Dream Destination, a media company founded by John Gonzalez, make their Latino Comics Expo debut this October 11 & 12. Their comic book series, THE ELITES UNIT 52, is written by John and Carlos Gonzalez, illustrated by Julien Aguilera and edited by Michelle Gonzalez.Cartoonist Javier Hernandez, creator of El Muerto, will be debuting two new books at the Expo, MORE COMICS and the LOS COMEX FELIZ NAVIDAD SPECIAL. In 2011, he co-founded the Latino Comics Expo with Bay Area patron of the arts, Ricardo Padilla.Daniel Parada, creator of the comic series Zotz: Serpent and Shield, returns once again to the Latino Comics Expo. His story follows twin brothers Pakal and Kaan in an alternative Mesoamerican history where the Spanish Conquest was repelled. Daniel is currently working on issue #3, and will have the first two books available at the Expo.Tragic Hero Comics join us for their first Latino Comics Expo. Publisher Ray Zepeda is the writer of their flagship title, ANTI-HERO 113, which he describes as a "collection of stories featuring aberrant Heroes, Antiheroes, and Villains for a whole new generation!". Afinastar Group & Entertainment will be making their debut at the Latino Comics Expo. Among their clients they represent are author Nancy Brook, whose books often revolve around Latin American legends. Nancy, as well as comic book creators repped by Afinastar, will be in attendance. Fantoons is a comic strip and animated series about "the craziness of being a rock n' roll fan", and will be attending their first Expo. The comic strip is written by David Calcanowith art by Charles Brubaker.JavSolo creates works inspired from Lucha Libre, sports, Chicano culture and comic books. He's currently working on a series of paintings called "The Rock N' Wrestling Trinity". This is his debut appearance at the Latino Comics Expo.

Aztec of the City, a comic book created and written by Fernando Rodriguez, will be joining us once again at the Latino Comics Expo. Launched in San José back in 1993, Fernando's line of comics have grown to include Cruz the Christian Warrior, Super Chicano & Super Latina and Mestizo, among others.Latino Toons is a Latin American collective of cartoonists, poets and writers and will be making their debut appearance at the Expo. Traveling from Mexico to represent the group will be Juan Navarrete and Mr. Glaubitz , who will also conduct an informative panel on Latin American comix.Pepe Melan is a veteran freelance artist who has worked on everything from CD covers, children's books, the cartoon P.J. Funny Bunny and numerous other projects. He's currently creating the supernatural comic series Tales of Blood & Fire. Yehudi Mercado, an Art Director for Disney Interactive, will be joining us for his first Expo. He recently worked as writer/art director for the Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon mobile game. His graphic novels include Pantalones, TX (Boom/Archaia), Buffalo Speedway (Devastator) and the upcoming Rocket Salvage (Boom/Archaia). Theresa Rojas, also joining us for her first Expo, is an artist and doctoral candidate at The Ohio State University completing her dissertation at MIT in the department of Comparative Media Studies & Writing.Her dissertation is on the narratological tools at work in Latino comics, literature, television, and film. She'll be moderating two panels at the Expo: "SuperLats: Latino Superheroes in Mainstream & Alternative Comics"and"Lucha Libre, Urban Apocalypse, and [Semi/Auto] Biographix: Latino Comics Studies in the 21st Century". In addition to our two exhibit rooms featuring cartoonists, writers, illustrators, zine makers, book vendors and more, the Expo will feature 2 days of panels, presentations and children's workshops.

Richard Jacobo joins us for his first Expo. Growing up in the U.S. from a large Mexican family, Richard says that 'comics, video games, and cartoons where my escape, moreover my salvation'. He's recently begun making his own comics, after using techniques he learned while printmaking and zine making.LIBROS LATINOSis a leading purveyor of books and journals from Latin America and the Caribbean, and returns to join us at this year's Expo. Their catalog includes over 25,000 titles, including art, literature, history and comics & graphic novels. Serenity Serseción also joins us for her first Expo. She's published her own comics independently and with other artists since 2006, while at the same time completing a PhD in psychology with a focus on Latino mental health and services. Her stories are influenced by her life in Puerto Rico, and adjusting to the USA; in addition to topics ranging from love, ghosts and mental health (such as depression, loss and anxiety).
